File Shelf

Drop it in the notch.
Pick it up anywhere.

File Shelf is a place to park files while you work. Drop them on the notch, drag them back out into any app, or send them to a nearby device with AirDrop in a flick.

What it does.

Drop and drag out

Drop files into the dashed zone, then drag them from the shelf into a message, a document or Finder when you’re ready.

AirDrop tile

A tile beside the drop zone sends what’s on the shelf to a nearby device, without opening Finder.

Thumbnails and Quick Look

Each file shows a thumbnail. Hover to preview it with Quick Look or remove it from the shelf.

Good to know.

  • Choose how long files stay: 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week or until removed. The default is 1 day.
  • The shelf keeps a reference to each file, not a copy. If you move or delete the original, it disappears from the shelf.
  • AirDrop needs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on. If it isn’t available, PeakPad tells you.
  • Change the retention window from the small menu at the top of the drop zone.

Questions.

Are my files copied?

No. The shelf keeps a link to each file where it lives. If the original is moved or deleted, the entry is removed.

How long do files stay on the shelf?

You choose: 1 hour, 1 day (the default), 1 week or until you remove them.

What do I need for AirDrop?

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and a nearby device that accepts AirDrop.
