How to choose a Mac notch app

Published 4 October 2026 · 2 min read · by Karuna Hazarika

Notch apps look alike in screenshots and differ a lot in daily use. Here’s a short checklist. We ask the same questions of PeakPad, and say where it stands.

1. What will you actually use?

Write down the three things you’d do from the notch every day: control music, drop files, check the calendar, time a task. Pick for those, not for the longest feature list.

2. How do you pay?

Some notch apps are free, some are one-time purchases and some are subscriptions. None is wrong, but decide up front. PeakPad is a one-time purchase with updates included.

3. What leaves your Mac?

A clipboard tool sees everything you copy. Ask what it records, where it’s stored, and whether it skips password managers. PeakPad keeps clipboard history on your Mac, skips common password managers, and has no account or telemetry. See the privacy page.

4. Does it work without a notch?

If you also use an external display or an older Mac, check that the app still works there. PeakPad draws its own notch on any screen.

5. Is it light?

An app that runs all day should be easy on battery and memory. PeakPad builds its panel only while it’s open, and the closed notch stops redrawing when idle.

6. How does it open?

Hover, click or a keyboard shortcut? You want the one that suits you. PeakPad supports hover or click, plus a global shortcut (⌃⌥Space by default) that you can change.

7. Is it kept up to date?

Look at how recently the app was updated and whether there’s a clear way to ask for features or report bugs. PeakPad has a request page and a Feedback tab inside the app.

8. Can you try it risk-free?

A trial or a money-back window means you can find out. PeakPad has a 7-day money-back guarantee.
